Neighborhood
The Mexican War Streets gets its name after generals and battles of the Mexican-American War. Some of the architecture dates back to, and around, the 1850s and is one of the highlights of this neighborhood. Architecture styles include; Romanesque, Second Empire, Italianate, and Greek Revival. While most of properties are not grand in size, the quality of the craftsmanship has stood the test of time. Many of the residences, have renovated their brick row homes, have added old fashin lanterns, uniquely colored trim work, and flower boxes. This has been conjunction with the local MWS Historical Society to preserve the area’s old world charm and elegance, making it a favorite local attraction. The neighborhood is small in size at 27 acres and the attractions right in the neighborhood include; The Mattress Factory, a contemporary art museum home to a collective of artists-in-residence and colorful Randyland. Places to eat include Commonplace Coffee, and the Monterey Pub. The neighborhood is adjacent to Allegheny Commons Park. Park activities include tennis, and basketball courts. There is also the Children’s Museum, and for lovers of science and nature, the National Aviary, Buhl Planetarium, are a 5 minute walk. So are PNC Park and Heinz Field if you are in town for the game. Other very close attractions include, Carnegie Science Center, Andy Warhol Museum and The Beer Market, is also just a hop, skip and jump away, with a beer menu 50 pages long specializing in beers from every corner of the world! Near the stadiums, a 5 minute Uber/Lyft, restaurants include; The Foundry, Southern Tier Brewery, Tequila Cowboy, Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse, Jerome Bettis’ Grille 36, Burgatory, and McFaddens. A 10 minute Uber/Lyft will get you Downtown, The Strip District, Lawrenceville, or the Southside. Walking distance to stadiums and a 5 minute commute downtown. You can be anywhere in the city within 10-15 minutes on a normal traffic day. And Pittsburgh isn’t exactly know for any major traffic congestion!
