Pittsburgh hosts the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds on March 18 and 20, 2027, at PPG Paints Arena, with Duquesne University serving as host. It is the sixth time the tournament has come to PPG Paints Arena and the eighth time Duquesne has hosted — this city knows how to do this weekend.
Why this weekend is different from every other event on the calendar
Eight teams arrive, and each brings a fanbase, a band, a cheer squad and a few hundred families who booked the moment the bracket was announced. Nobody knows which eight until Selection Sunday — which is exactly why lodging goes before anyone knows anything. The smart money books the week now and sorts out the tickets later.
Block Wednesday March 17 through Sunday March 21, 2027. Teams and travelling fans arrive the day before the first game and the winners stay through Saturday’s second round.
Doing the weekend properly
PPG Paints Arena is in Uptown, a short walk or hop from Downtown, which means the whole thing works on foot: games at the arena, everything else Downtown and across the bridges. Between sessions there is the Duquesne Incline for the view that explains the city, the Strip District for breakfast, and the museums on the North Shore. Why a whole home wins a tournament weekend
This is a four- and five-night trip for a group that travelled together — families, alumni crews, band parents. A whole home means one place for everyone instead of a scattered block of hotel rooms, a kitchen for the breakfast before an early tip, a living room to watch the other games in, and laundry by day three. It is usually less per person than separate rooms, and it is a far better basecamp for a weekend where nobody knows the schedule until the last minute.
