Forty-one nights a year, PPG Paints Arena is the warmest place in the city. Penguins home games run October through April — straight through the months when everything else in Pittsburgh goes quiet — which makes a hockey weekend the most reliable winter trip this city offers.
Why a Penguins weekend beats almost any other winter trip
The arena sits in Uptown, a short walk or hop from Downtown. That means the whole evening works on foot: dinner Downtown, walk to the game, walk back. No garage, no ice-covered windshield at eleven at night, no designated driver argument.
And unlike football, there are a lot of them. If you want to see the Penguins you have your pick of forty-one dates, which means you can build the trip around a weekend that suits you rather than the one Sunday the schedule allows.
Visiting fans: this is a good building to be an opponent in
Philadelphia is five hours. Columbus is three. Washington, Buffalo, Detroit and New York all travel here in numbers, and the divisional nights have genuine edge to them. Pittsburgh crowds will give you grief and then tell you where to eat, roughly in that order.
One worth circling: the Flyers are at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday, January 15, 2027, and the Blue Jackets on Saturday, January 17, 2027 — the same weekend the CAN/AM Challenge Cup fills the rinks with youth hockey. If you are in town with a team that weekend, you can put an NHL game in front of your players between tournament days. That is a trip they remember.
Build the weekend out
Hockey pairs with hockey: the outdoor rink at PPG Place runs November into late February, ten minutes from the arena, and skating in the afternoon before a game at night is about as good as a winter Saturday gets. Add the museums on the North Shore, the Duquesne Incline for the view, and dinner from our Pittsburgh food guide.
In December, the whole thing layers onto the holiday season — see Christmas in Pittsburgh.
Where to stay for a Penguins game
Stay central and the arena is a walk or a very short hop. A whole home means room for the group that drove in, a kitchen for the morning after, laundry, and parking that stays put all weekend while you walk everywhere. January and February are also the best value months of the year in this city — the same home costs less than it does in October, and Downtown is yours.
